Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Stop Accepting Food Stamps

Medical Marijuana dispensaries may have suffered another blow this week, worse than prior strikes. The USDA is cracking down on a practice, some might not have known about. According to FoxNews.com, the federal group has just put a halt to the use of government food stamps for medical marijuana.

Yes, users of the government issued funding have. States that allow MMJ have been cited for illegally allowing food stamp recipients to get deductions for their dispensary pick-ups.

Hushed quietly, the US Department of Agriculture sent out a memo to state offices, ordering the practice be stopped. Although 18 states have made cannabis legal to some extent, it is not legal to use federal government funds on MMJ purchases.

"FNS is now reaffirming its long standing policy that a household may not utilize the S.N.A.P. medical deduction for the cost of any substance considered illegal under Federal law," wrote Lizbeth Silbermann, director of the USDA program development division. She continued in her memo, calling out violators indirectly.

SNAP stands for Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps.
